After graduating from North Central, Mike earned his undergraduate degree from Gonzaga University in 1979 and graduated from the Gonzaga University School of Law in 1981. He started his legal career as an associate attorney at Lukins & Annis P.S., where he worked from 1981 to 1988.
During the early years of his legal career, Mike was a member of the City of Spokane Planning Commission (1979), a member of the Spokane Public Schools Board of Directors (1975-1983), and on the Eastern Washington University Board of Trustees (1985-2002).
In 1988 Mike became a partner at K&L Gates, LLP, and remained a practicing attorney there until 2010. During that period, he served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Spokane County Bar Association (1988-1992), serving as its president in 1991-92. He was on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors and General Counsel of the Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce (2004-2008) and was on the Spokane County United Way Board of Directors (1988-1991).
In 2012, President Barrack Obama appointed Mike Ormsby to be the United States Attorney for the district of Eastern Washington. The United States Senate confirmed his nomination on October 15, 2010, and soon afterwards Ormsby assumed the duties of U.S. Attorney from his offices in the Federal Courthouse in downtown Spokane.
